The Glen
Oaks Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc. (GOVAC) was founded in 1973 by a group of
10 caring, community minded individuals, who wanted to assure that local
community-based EMS services would be available to their neighbors. Glen Oaks
VAC is a NYS Not-For-Profit corporation that provides a volunteer EMS/Ambulance
Service to residents in its service area. The agency services the Northeast
Queens Communities of Bellerose, Floral Park, Glen Oaks, New Hyde Park, Oakland
Gardens, and the North Shore Towers. Glen Oaks VAC also maintains Mutual Aid
agreements with surrounding community volunteer ambulance corps in the NYC
area, and is a participant in the Regional EMS Council of NYC-FDNY EMS
Mobilization plan.
The Glen
Oaks VAC is both a certified basic life support and advanced life support
ambulance service, approved by the NYS Department of Health’s Bureau of
Emergency Medical Services and the NYC Regional Emergency Medical Services
Council. The agency provides Emergency Medical and Ambulance transport service
to residents and visitors in its service communities, using its 3
state-of-the-art ambulances. The agency also provides emergency medical
stand-by service at major local events, including many of the larger events at
the Queens County Farm Museum and Alley Pond Park. Additionally, the agency
regularly sponsors CPR and first aid classes that are open to all community
residents.
Today, Glen Oaks VAC
consists of over 150 volunteers who serve as Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics,
Emergency Vehicle Operators, Dispatchers, Explorers (14-17 yr. old Youth Squad
Members), and administrative members. The agency consists of a diverse set of
members who work in various occupational fields. The active membership consists
of volunteers who work in the fields of health care (Nurses, PAs, DOs, MDs),
emergency services (EMT’s, paramedics, firefighters, police officers), and in
various other fields (business executives, teachers, engineers, skills trades’
people, etc).
Volunteering
with the Glen Oaks VAC has led to careers in health care and emergency services
for many of our current and former members. Many of our members have even gone
on to serve in prominent roles within the emergency services (FDNY EMS
Lieutenants, FDNY EMS Captains, NYPD Leadership).
The Officers and Members of
the Glen Oaks Volunteer Ambulance Corps wish to thank our community residents
and businesses for their continued generous support! We also wish to encourage
interested individuals to join our team!
